How to Place an iPhone Call on Hold

If you're in the middle of a call and need to deal with something pressing but don't want to hang up, it can be helpful to put the call on hold. On an iPhone, the best way to do this is with the Mute button. This allows you to finish what you need to do with the call muted, and then pick up the call where you left off when you're ready. Once you know how to do it, putting a call on hold is easy.

Steps

  1. Place the call, if you haven't done so already. Tap the Phone button on the device, dial in the number, and tap the green call button. The hold/mute option will only appear when you're on a call.
  2. Press the Mute button. It looks like a microphone with a diagonal slash through it and is labeled "mute." When pressed, the Mute button will illuminate, thereby indicating the call is muted and the caller can't hear you.

  3. Press the Mute button again to return to the call. This button acts like a switch during a iPhone call; one press enables the hold/mute and the next press disables it.

Tips

  • When you are on hold with an iPhone call, you are still using your minutes, so if you have a limited number of monthly minutes, be careful of wasting them.
  • For those who are using iOS 7 or a later operating system, you can also switch back to the Home screen by tapping the Home button on the device while the caller is on hold. To return to the phone call, just open the phone app again.
