Many of us are of the view that Search Engine Optimization is a tricky business. Why? This is because Google uses an algorithm that takes 200 different factors to rank a webpage. Fail one of them and work twice as hard to get into the ranks or just fails. Google is ruthless yes. Most search engines treat their own algorithms as top proprietary. This is because of two main reasons: firstly they obviously don't want their competition to aware of their secrets. Secondly, they have to take extreme measures against spammers. Who design their sites in way that they would rank via spamming.
SEO world gets further complicated due to the dramatic changes over the last couple of years. The strategy that was hot and happening in 2007 was made redundant in 2008. Similarly the approach used in 2008 was long gone in 2009 and this has been happening ever since. So we narrowed down to 4 basic bad ideas that would prove lethal if used in today's day and age.
- Do not rely on keyword meta-tags. This strategy has been made redundant 3 years ago. Now search engine only see visible text that is displayed on your page. Thanks to Spammers!
- Avoid cramming keywords into invisible text. This will get your site banned definitely. Even your little tricks of stuff keywords in same color as background or places which are not visible to the user. So be very careful.
- Less harmful way is Hording page ranks. Although, this has been discard for the past two three years since most webmasters don't understand this technique. Therefore, it is easier to get away with it. If hording a page rank won't do you harm but it won't do any good either, so what's the point.
- Do not duplicate content. Firstly avoid doing it, one it look horrendous to the user. Secondly there is no point as the search engine would require a single content, at a time to rank it. By duplicating content you are only wasting your time and money.
- Canonicalization www is also one of the big problem that mostly people don't focus on it. In this problem one website contain multiple urls with same content and structure. When google visit those pages it considers separate pages and consider them duplicate because of same content. Or some time happen that one domain appear in google with www.example.com and example.com which is not good for any website
