'Arctic Enemas' and tear gas: How Tough Mudder concocts its brutal courses

This week brought good news for fitness-minded masochists: The wildly popular Tough Mudder endurance challenge introduced an all-new set of course obstacles for an estimated 1 million participants to climb over, run around, scoot under and slither through at events worldwide in 2015


One new feature is called "Cry Baby." It consists of an enclosed area through which participants must crawl, while being misted with what the company calls a "tear gas-like substance" that stings the lungs and eyes. Meanwhile, an obstacle dubbed the "Arctic Enema" is back in an updated form; this feature is an ice-water plunge that Tough Mudder promises will leave you "feeling like shrink-wrapped leftovers straight out of the freezer."
