When computers first made their entry, they were so big that they occupied whole rooms. As the storage capacity of the hardware kept increasing, the size of the computer kept reducing. Today, a chip the size of a pin head has so much storage capacity that extremely huge amounts of data can be stored on very small hardware. Now safety and access to the hardware has become a concern. To be able to access data on the move, we had to carry it with us in some form of hardware. But cloud computing eliminates this need to carry data with us.
Cloud computing means the deployment of groups of remote servers at different locations around the world that are interconnected by a network and software in such a manner as allows for centralised storage of data. It allows online access to computer services and resources. All that is required at the user end is some device to access the internet. Depending on access, the clouds can be classified as public, private or hybrid. Clouds are a way of sharing resources so that there is coherence and economy of scale. It is based on the broad concept of converged infrastructure and shared services. Cloud resources are allocated dynamically as per demand.
With cloud computing, it is not necessary for each individual to buy storage facility or even the software that he needs for a particular purpose. By accessing the cloud, he can access the required software, perform the required tasks and store it remotely on the cloud, to be accessed again whenever required. He does not pay for owning the software, he pays merely for using it for a period of time. The need for purchasing licenses for different applications is eliminated. It is one of the important things to remember.
Many businesses are moving away from installing infrastructure at their end to shifting data to a cloud. It helps the businesses to cut down on infrastructure and maintenance costs. Clouds work on the principle of 'pay as you use' model. So a business must work out the costs of usage and check if it works for the business in the long run before switching to cloud computing. The rates are also not fixed and likely to keep changing depending on the service provider. Clouds may not also be suitable for businesses where privacy and security of data is a prime concern.
