Samsung's SmartThings announces new hub, sensors and premium subscription service

The focus of Samsung's CES 2015 keynote was the Internet of Things (a phrase we promise not to use again in this article), so it's no surprise that SmartThings got a big shout-out.


The Korean electronics giant acquired SmartThings last August for a reported $200 million. Since then, Samsung says its platform has seen "tremendous growth and innovation." According to SmartThings founder and CEO Alex Hawkinson, the number of developers has doubled to more than 10,000, and more than 1 million apps have been installed.



At the same time, SmartThings and the home-automation space at large have seen increased competition from all corners.
