Oscar hopefuls 'Selma,' 'Imitation Game,' 'Foxcatcher' battered by criticism

LOS ANGELES — Oscar nominations ballots opened this week, amplifying the shameless ad campaigns that studios wage to make sure their films are at the front of voters' minds. But there is a dark side to that magic — and it has been on display this week, too.


Oscar hopefuls Foxcatcher, Selma, The Imitation Game and even Big Eyes have fallen under varying degrees of shade in the past few days. The criticisms were the standard attacks on historical accuracy, always the danger when basing a film on real events.
