J.R.R. Tolkien fans toast to 'the professor' on his 123rd birthday

With Malbec, Champagne and rum in hand—often in medieval-looking goblets—J.R.R. Tolkien fans around the world toasted to the author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on what would have been his 123rd birthday.


Some super fans also hosted Hobbit dinners, or went a step further and enjoyed second breakfasts—a meal lauded by Hobbits, but not Rangers of the North.



Others celebrated by gathering at bars and pubs, joining in a toast, a hearty cheer to "The Professor."


Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 and died on September 2, 1973, but the toast has become an annual tradition even after his passing. In addition to penning several fantasy books, Tolkien spent decades working as a professor at Oxford University. Read more...
