Beer is so much more than the sweet, hoppy nectar of the gods. It's a social activity, the contents of a DIY project or a base for a delicious recipe. Though the beverage itself is one of the oldest drinks humans have produced, the canned version as you know it hasn't even been around for a century.


The beer can made its official debut 80 years ago, on January 24, 1935 — though less, ahem, legal versions of the invention were available before the Prohibition, brewery collectors claim. But on this day 80 years ago, Krueger's Finest Beer and Krueger's Cream Ale made their debut for sale in Richmond, Virginia. At the time, the highest alcohol content was 3.2%. Read more...
