Ross Ulbricht has spent more than a year in a Brooklyn prison. Tuesday marked the official beginning of his trial, which will decide if he is, in fact, the mastermind responsible for Silk Road.
For the first time, Ulbricht has admitted that he did indeed create Silk Road, according to reports. What he didn't admit, however, was that he had anything to do with it ballooning into the Internet's biggest market for illegal drugs, available for purchase like any other item someone could buy online. The FBI shut it down in 2013.
The operation has been valued at $1.2 billion. Federal prosecutors allege that Ulbricht spearheaded Silk Road under the alias "Dread Pirate Roberts," a reference to the '80s Rob Reiner film The Princess Bride.
