AirAsia Flight 8501's black box pings detected, authorities say

Indonesia search officials believe signals from the data recorders of crashed AirAsia Flight 8501 have been detected Friday, 12 days after the plane crashed into the Java Sea.


The National Search and Rescue director S.B Supriyadi told AFP the pings had been detected. "A ship detected the pings. The divers are trying to reach it," he said. "The location of the ping is reported to be near where the tail was found."


Santoso Sayogo, an investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee, told Reuters it appeared the black box was no longer in the tail.


"We have our fingers crossed it is the black box. Divers need to confirm. Unfortunately it seems it's off from the tail. But the divers need to confirm the position," he said. Read more...
