Beginning Jan. 2, undocumented immigrants will be able to apply for a driver's license in California.
Assembly Bill 60, or the Safe and Responsible Drivers Act, removes the need for individuals to prove that they are in the country legally, while the rest of the process for getting a driver's license remains the same.
The California license will have the words “Federal Limits Apply” on the front of the card, with an explanation on the back that it is valid for driving in the state but cannot be used for federal purposes.
Tens of thousands of immigrants are expected to apply. But immigrant advocates are warning that anyone who previously obtained a license under a false name or with a stolen Social Security number needs to consult a lawyer. Read more...
